In the article was this little nugget from her father, a farmer, that she's held onto all this time;
That's what he (her father) always taught us: to stay out of debt and save our money and not buy anything until we had the money to pay for it.
This is similar to Taleb saying that we learned everything we need to know about finance from our grandmothers; don't borrow money, don't lend money and save as much as you can. Obviously I would add live below your means.
The odds of accumulating a lot of money, like well into the seven figures or greater, are pretty slim with probably several things beyond one's control. I think a person has a much better chance of success by living in a modest home, having no credit card debt, driving cars for ten years instead of five or in other words keeping the monthly nut relatively low. A $100,000 income is pretty low in the context of a $3500 mortgage, $1200 worth of car payments and some credit card debt but is enough to live phat with no mortgage, one car payment and no credit cards. The first example would make for a lot of financial stress, if you want no part of that stress then hopefully you are a lot closer to the second scenario.
The Pink Car has been returned!

Maybe the pink car vanishing act was part of a graduation prank. Keep us posted.
WH, I guess I was not clear in a past post, apologies.
The car was stolen by a group of highschoolers about to graduate. They spray painted it and left it at the highschool. The group was somehow caught within a couple of days, most of them were 18 and might be facing charges (not sure how I feel about that). The highschool was involved in priming and then repainting it back to pink (a little brighter and shinier than before). Yesterday after fire training as I was taking our engine to town for fuel I saw a caravan of what could have been highschool students bringing the Pink Car back.
Ha! Good guess.
We had a high school graduation prank go awry here...school admin said pranksters could either not walk during graduation ceremonies or face charges. High school stadium was pretty empty graduation nite lol. At least the incident gave the local newspaper something to cover for a couple of weeks. Among other things, prank involved a stuffed cougar (four legged kind).
you must live in a small town too:-)
it was news multiple times in our local paper
back in my day we lived within our means and when we pulled a prank, we made durn sure we didn't get caught.
what is this world coming to?
next thing you know those dang kids will need counseling to get over the stress of gettin caught.

world class funny
back in my day the only counseling I ever got was from the end of my dad's belt
and he paid cash for his belt too, none of this credit card mumjo jumbo business for him
I mean really, does a whoopin from a belt bought on credit really count if your dad don't pay off his dang card?
must be where the world's durn credit problems come from
credit-default-swats
I think this article shows the power of small amounts..
