if you are going to leave that sort of comment you must also come up with a name for this indicator.
Tradition says we aren't near a bottom until people stop saying we are near a bottom.
Having once experienced a parachute malfunction, I can confirm that you never truly appreciate how fast you are falling until you hit the ground and look back up at your fellow jumpers to get a frame-of-reference on where you should actually be.
I call this the "cigarette roll" indicator.

I'll guess it was either a partial opening, or he had to go to an emergency chute, which is smaller, and results in a harder landing, though MUCH less than a "splat", *s*.
