Flat Panel TVs
If there is any truth to the size of the proposed rebate I think everyone who does not have a flat panel now will go out and get one.
We bought our first flat panel a few months ago from Costco.com. It was manufactured by the Estonian subsidiary of the Sheinhardt Wig Company so it was very cheap.

funniest sit com on TV
$1600 will almost cover my heating
bill for the winter...it's gone
up 73% since last year.
30 Rock might be the cleverest show ever, not sure if it is the funniest but the subtleties and the overt humor are brilliant.
Our 42" LCD (LG) was, I think, $1,600 at BBY last summer. For the closet economists out there, it replaced a 3-year old $4,500 set and has a superior picture. If only I could fill up my car for $1.18 a gallon!
Roger, you have described bear markets as "rolling over". Is this what rolling over looks like?
Also, do you see any sectors that you are looking at as buying opportunities at this time?
As everyone looks for safe havens, it is still hard for me to see a long term bear in the energy and ag commodity stocks, even though they have taken a big hit these past few weeks. Just one factoid,,that the UK a net exporter of oil from the North Sea, will become a net importer within the next year or two, coupled with the depletion of cheap oil fields around the world makes oil and drillers seem like long term winners. Same with the DBA's of the marketplace. Gotta eat. Anyway, I always look forward to your humor and balance.
Thanks,
Scoot
in this morning's earlier post i posited that this seems awfully fast in comparing the market action (not the fundie back ground) to 1998. If so a feel good rally makes sense. I would describe the action as rolling over until the start of this week which has felt faster, kind of too fast.
as I think a normal bear market has started we would only be halfway there in terms of magnitude so "buying opportunities" is not the first priority.
I heard the income cap would be $110K for married couples...sometimes I wonder why I work so hard instead of waiting for gov't handouts
Rog, I cannot afford a flat screen after this surprise crash in the markets. This is the worst I have ever seen, all my gains from '06 wiped clean and some. How do you sleep at night when your portfolio is crashing???
stupid proposal, i suspect this will fuel inflation & push usa to recession. :( roger, ur comments pls.
anon 730, have you not been reading this site long? i write about managing emotion so often it is borderline repetitive.
markets go down every now and then, period. bear markets are guaranteed to occur. guaranteed. worrying about certainty is wasted energy.
I have written a bazillion times about when I got defensive, why I did and how as I did it. I am far from crashing down. Sorry if you are but if emotions are really driving the bus you need to do something different.
As far as the $800 or $1600 being a good idea or a bad idea. Its not priority one for me. It was not much of a help when he did it before, as opposed to the div and cap gains cuts which I do believe contributed to the market's recovery in 2003. If everyone runs out and buys a flat panel that weekend I am not sure it can have lasting impact but I might be wrong.
I get the picture.
Reminds me of McGovern promising everybody in the country $1000 back in '72. Given the rate of inflation during Mr. Peanut's administration, that would be about $5000 now. Frat Boy sure is a cheapskate :)
