I think the data are reasonably accurate. It is related to a theme I have been following for some years, ever since I read Lester Brown's (1995) book, "Who will feed China?" You can find a more recent update at WorldWatch http://www.worldwatch.org/press/news/1998/04/22/

PS: I should add that I have never really found a good way for a smallish investor to work that theme. PHO offers some possibilities as do companies offering solutions for greater efficiency in food production like Monsanto, but at this point I am not aware of a way to get to the core of the matter from an investing standpoint; i.e., given that China's industrial growth has come at a greater price than generally realized (loss of potable water, food production capacity, etc.) how does one access that?
